چکیده

We study the relation between size and star formation activity in a complete sample of 225 massive (M∗ > 5 · 10 M⊙) galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5, selected from the FIREWORKS UV-IR catalog of the CDFS. Based on stellar population synthesis model fits to the observed restframe UV-NIR SEDs, and independent MIPS 24μm observations, 65% of galaxies are actively forming stars, while 35% are quiescent. Using sizes derived from 2D surface brightness profile fits to high resolution (FWHMPSF ∼ 0.45 ) groundbased ISAAC data, we confirm and improve the significance of the relation between star formation activity and compactness found in previous studies, using a large, complete mass-limited sample. At z ∼ 2, massive quiescent galaxies are significantly smaller than massive star forming galaxies, and a median factor of 0.34±0.02 smaller than galaxies of similar mass in the local universe. 13% of the quiescent galaxies are unresolved in the ISAAC data, corresponding to sizes < 1kpc, more than 5 times smaller than galaxies of similar mass locally. The quiescent galaxies span a Kormendy relation which, compared to the relation for local early types, is shifted to smaller sizes and brighter surface brightnesses and is incompatible with passive evolution. The progenitors of the quiescent galaxies, were likely dominated by highly concentrated, intense nuclear star bursts at z ∼ 3 − 4, in contrast to star forming galaxies at z ∼ 2 which are extended and dominated by distributed star formation. Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Relation Between Stellar Mass and Star Formation Activity in Galaxies

For a mass-selected sample of 66544 galaxies with photometric redshifts (zphot) from the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS), we examine the evolution of star formation activity as a function of stellar mass in galaxies. We estimate the cosmic star formation rates (SFR) over the range 0.2 < zphot < 1.2, using the rest-frame 2800 Å flux (corrected for extinction). We find the mean SFR to be a stron...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Hst and Spitzer Imaging of Red and Blue Galaxies at Z ∼ 2.5: a Correlation between Size and Star Formation Activity from Compact Quiescent Galaxies to Extended Star Forming Galaxies

We present HST NICMOS+ACS and Spitzer IRAC+MIPS observations of 41 galaxies at 2 < z < 3.5 in the FIRES MS1054 field with red and blue rest-frame optical colors. About half of the galaxies are very compact (effective radii re < 1 kpc) at rest-frame optical wavelengths, the others are extended (1 < re < 10 kpc). For reference, 1 kpc corresponds to 0. 12 at z = 2.5 in the adopted cosmology. We se...

A Simple Model for the Size-evolution of Elliptical Galaxies

We use semi-analytical modelling of galaxy formation to predict the redshift-size-evolution of elliptical galaxies. Using a simple model in which relative sizes of elliptical galaxies of a given mass correlate with the fraction of stars formed in a star burst during a major merger event, we are able to reproduce the observed redshift-size-evolution. The size evolution is a result of the amount ...
